Fred R. Schwartzberg

Principal and
Senior Engineer


Fred R. Schwartzberg received his Bachelor of Science Degree, Metallurgical Engineer, from the Colorado School of Mines in 1953.  He earned his Master's Degree, Metallurgical Engineer, at Ohio State University in 1958.  He has completed the course work toward his DSc., Metallurgical Engineer, at the Colorado School of Mines.  Mr. Schwartzberg is a registered Professional Engineer.

Mr. Schwartzberg's expertise includes fracture mechanics, mechanics of materials, fracture and failure analysis of metals and materials, behavior and inspection of welds and brazes, prevention and analysis of corrosion, nondestructive materials testing, analysis of electric malfunctions, fire investigation involving metals, and basic engineering.

Mr. Schwartzberg began his consulting career on a part-time basis in 1961, when he investigated aircraft, automobile and pipeline failures.  His current experience includes industrial, insurance, and forensic investigations into the causes of failures, salvage and restoration methods, fires involving materials and metallurgical failures, testing procedures, automobile and truck fires, pressure vessels and tank failures, hoists and elevators, and medical and exercise equipment.

Teaching experience includes adjunct instructorships in the Engineering Technology Department of Metropolitan State College, the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Denver, Guest Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Colorado State University, and advisor and instructor for continuing education courses in engineering and metallurgy.  He is currently on the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at Colorado State University, and advisor and instructor for continuing education courses in engineering and metallurgy.  He is currently on the Humanities and Social Sciences Department Visiting Committee of the Colorado School of Mines.

Affiliations and activities include a twelve-year gubernatorial appointment to the Board of Trustees, Colorado School of Mines, positions on the directing boards of the Colorado School of Mines Foundation, the CSM Alumni Association, and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Society for Metals.  He has served on the American Society for Mechanical Engineers Research Committee on Fracture Mechanics, the American Society for Testing and Materials Low-Temperature Panel, and several NASA Blue Ribbon panels.

Among the many honors and awards received by Mr. Schwartzberg are the ASTM Templin Award for development of testing methods and Martin Marietta awards for publications, achievements, and patents.  He has authored, compiled, and edited more than two dozen publications.
